The name Choquequirao in Quechua means “Cradle of Gold”. The archeological complex is built high up the Quriwayrahina Mountain Range.
Both Choquequirao and Machu Picchu were built in the same era by the renowned Inca Emperor Pachacutec. Choquequirao’s archaeological complex is spread over six square kilometers.
When the Spanish invaded the former Inca capital, they could not conquer Choquequirao because of its remote location. The Incas left it abandoned and took asylum in Vilcabamba. The whole complex was covered in lush vegetation. Just a third of the complex is excavated and is open for tourism.
Choquequirao Trek is popular among travelers wanting to explore the lesser-known yet prominent Inca ruin. The trek takes you off the touristic track, through Apurimac Canyon offering stunning views of the Canyons of Apurimac.

The trail involves plenty of uphill and downhill hikes. You will be experiencing different climatic conditions as the altitude changes. Due to its remote location, Choquequirao receives just a handful of visitors a day.
To enhance tourism, authorities are planning on installing a cable car. This will rapidly increase the number of visitors who wants to visit this Inca Masterpiece on a full-day tour from the city of Cusco.
